So Friday afternoon Boris was outside on his tie-out watching the neighbors sand their driveway and try to make it safe enough to drive up. He watched them for quite awhile while I shoveled off the porch. Then for some reason he decided he needed to go visit the neighbors and ran full out until he hit the end of the tie-out and his collar latch popped. So his Halloween collar is no more. We went out last night to try and find a replacement that buckled or was made better. We ended up with a nice Christmas collar for $2. Big enough he can grow for some time and still wear it. Its got soft felt backing with a nylon collar and ribbon overlay. Unfortunately its the most obnoxious shades of green. I don’t think it looks that bad, but Tim thinks its awful so my job is to determine if we can replace the ribbon with something nicer or just take it off. One of the only good things about having a bigger dog is you often manage to find good deals in the clearance bin since everyone wants teeny dogs.
We celebrated early since Petco’s Valentine’s Party was last Saturday. We got paw print valentines, our picture taken, and a cookie to decorate. We also got to meet lots of great dogs like Jake the huge doberman, and a nice malamute/shepherd mix puppy. We didn’t win the kissing contest, but thats ok. It was a fun experience and the chihuahua that won was beyond adorable. Hope everyone else had a great holiday.
Yesterday was the Petco Fashion Show with prizes for general Best in Show and Best in Show in a Petco fashion. We bought a matching set of t-shirt and Jacket from Target. They have a skull and crossbones with a santa hat and “Naughty” written on them. I spent a good part of Friday knitting a little black scarf to match the winter theme.
After a quick stop to dump off the garbage we headed over to Petco in anticipation of some biscuits and at least a participation certificate. Cherokee stayed at home which we figured was better this time. After parking halfway across the parking lot in the first available space we made our way over to Petco. Not only was it the Fashion Show it was also the Greyhound Adoption table day. Luckily the lady who runs the table is a great lady and has two wonderfully socialized animals who take children and other dogs with a grain of salt.
We headed in to sign in and join the motley crew of dogs and cats to wait our turn. Everything from a pair of chihuahuas to a 20lb cat was there. There were different judges and the “press” guy had a digital camera smaller than most cell phones, but everyone seemed to be in good spirits. We watched as people coerced their animals up onto the catwalk and drug them down the length. Boris of course jumped right up and ran straight to the other end. Where he got a polaroid taken before running back down to me and jumping off.
We didn’t win the general Best in Show, that went to a nice big mix named “Boo” in a tux with tails. The Petco Fashion Best in Show went to a pair of chihuahuas in fluffy pink sweaters. We would have liked the pretty purple rosette, but the tube of meat wouldn’t have been good or bad. It would have been nice for training treats but nothing we couldn’t do with hot dogs. We got a couple mini meat rolls for entering anyway. It was still chea socialization and there was a bigger crowd.
So last Saturday we went to the Petco Howl-o-ween party with the boys in their costumes. Well actually we took them and their costumes and proceeded to try and put them on while there. Which worked great for Cherokee, as he’s willing to put up with about anything so long as food is involved but Borris was more interested in all the PEOPLE. It was of course packed with people, dogs, and even a couple cats; both for the party and as part of the usual shopping trips people make. And being our little extrovert he needed, not wanted, to meet everyone. We finally managed to wrangle him into his costume and wrap gauze around him. Being the only puppy he already had a head above the other entrants, and he spent a good portion of the time licking the legs of the judges when it wasn’t his turn. He then strutted the cat walk and “sat” “down” “sat up” to lots of oohs and awws. Needless to say its probably wasn’t even a close race. He got a beautiful award, ribbon and a $15 gift card as well as a bag of cookies that every participant got with some coupons. We definitely had fun and have plans to attend the fashion show next month.
